Chapter 20: Social and Gender Structure

1. Social:
A. Agriculture the lords after realizing that tax revanues from
agriculture boosted the economy, allowed for surfs and peasants to farm
the land freely.
I. New tools such as plows and horse collars allowed for easy farming.
II. New crops such as Citris fruits and sugarcane and other fruits and vegetables
helped widen the diets of the people.
III. These new development caused the population to go upwards.
IV. Experimented with new agricultural techniques and crop rotations.
B. European society was able to suport a large range of proffesion incuding aritsans and
attracted peasants and surfs for urban opportunities.
I. The prodution of cotton allowed people to live more conveiniently.
II. The Medditeranian Sea allowed for easy trade with Muslim.
III. The Hanseatic League were the states that surrounded the Baltic north sea.
C. The three estates were "those who fight, those who pray, and those who work"
Those who fight:
They would be the nobles and the soldiers and the knights.
Those who pray:
These were the priests, bisshops, popes, and monks and nuns.
Those who work:
Consisted of the majority of population mainly the serfs and peasants who worked the fieldes
D. Women:
I. They were offered guilds unlike the women in Indian and society.
II. The women of the time wanted men to be kind and gracious. That is why they encoraged
Chivalry.
III. They also supported the traubadours.
IIII. The women in the country side were expected to cook and make babies.
